Lady Mary is a beautiful example of the work of Thomas Harrison Butler (1871–1945), the British ophthalmologist who became renowned for his exceptionally well‑balanced yacht designs. This vessel is based on his own yacht Vindilis, but features a slightly longer waterline and modified bow and stern to make the design even more stable. Only three yachts of this type were built in 1937.
Lady Mary was constructed at Whisstock’s Boatyard in Woodbridge, Suffolk, a yard that produced more than 700 boats between 1926 and 1990, including over 200 during the Second World War.
Her early adventures were already featured in The Yachtsman magazine in June 1938. Since then, she has sailed from Poole, Southampton, Woolverstone and Burnham-on-Crouch. Today, she is usually moored at the Greenwich Yacht Club in London, still carrying the same elegant lines and classic charm with which she first set sail in the 1930s.
